Unguis incarnates ?- literally, an ?en-fleshed nail? -- is commonly known as an ingrown toenail. Although ingrown nails can occur in both toes and fingers, they most frequently affect the big toes. Poor footwear is the most salient cause of ingrown toenails. Inadequate wiggle room for toes in shoes or stockings creates pressure on the nails and surrounding skin, encouraging abnormal growth.
