Going to the emergency department

Symptoms of serious diseases can sometimes mimic the symptoms of very minor medical problems. For instance, the crushing chest pain that accompanies a heart attack can also be a symptom of simple heartburn. A terrible stomach ache might mean appendicitis, or it might just be a case of menstrual cramps. Therefore, it's sometimes difficult for a person to decide whether to go to the hospital emergency department for immediate treatment.
